Owning a business can sometimes feel like a whirlwind. So much you have to do, and only so many hours in the day to get it all done.
Today’s edition of “Qtips” isn’t about those big items on your to-do list. After all, I don’t think you’re going to forget to open your doors or purchase inventory.
Instead, I want to identify four of the most common things retail merchants overlook when starting their own businesses. So what are they? And why should you even care?
- Faster Internet for Your POS System – Does you terminal still run on dial-up? Reliable internet is the key to faster checkout speeds and happier customers.
- Security Cameras – Ward off theft by installing security cameras inside your business. Not only does this decrease theft by 50%, but it also expedites any insurance claims you might have.
- Caution Cones for Spills – Accidents happen. Someone might spill their coffee on the floor, or your drainage system might leak unexpectedly. Use caution cones to warn others before they slip on a wet spot…and you’re held liable for their injuries…
- Online Listings – Lots of people search for businesses online. List your business on sites like Yelp and Google, and make sure you information is up to date, and you might just see an increase in people coming to check out your business.
The common thread here? You don’t do these things for some big immediate payoff; you do them to protect your business from failure. Even though they might not seem very important now, ignoring them can damage your business long-term. You don’t, for example, want to lose out on business just because your business isn’t listed online, right?
Be proactive and detail-oriented! Owning your own business isn’t a “clock-in, clock-out” deal…it’s a 24 hour, 7 day-a-week job. Cover your bases – your bottom line will thank you for it.
